Our History

I created The Fatwood Company during my years as a firefighter in Oregon.  During the summer months when
fighting fires I couldn't help but notice the length and intensity that old pine stumps burned.  One pine stump would
continue to burn for days, even after all other fuels were consumed.

I recalled how my grandfather had given kindling from old pine stumps to my family.  It was the perfect gift for a
family that used a fireplace for heating.  So I thought this would be a great product to offer to the general public.  In
the beginning this company was started to provide a second income during the winter months when forest fires
were no longer burning.  Over time I was able to expand the business into what it is today.  I now run this business
full time and we have expanded our product line to include a variety of fireplace accessories as well as a number of
different Fatwood products. We are now based in the Northwest and we still harvest our Fatwood domestically.  All
of our processing is also done in the US.

If you are new to the world of Fatwood, let me explain a little bit about what Fatwood is.  Fatwood comes from the
heart of old pine stumps.  Decades ago during logging operations numerous pine trees were cut and hauled away.
Today the only remains of the tree is the stump.  Over the years after the tree had been cut down, the stump
continued to bring up pitch from the roots.  With nowhere for the pitch to go it eventually hardened enough to
become brittle and often turned the wood colors from red, purple, and brown.  After this happens the stump is ready
to be harvested.

I think Fatwood is a great way to use a resource that might otherwise be wasted.  Of course it takes a great deal of
effort to harvest individual stumps, and then split them into tiny pieces, so that is probably why they still exist
today.  We hope that you try some of our Fatwood to start your fires.  You can use it for your own fireplace at
home, camping, or for a unique gift.  I guarantee the quality of our Fatwood will exceed your expectations.
